Nagarkot was one of the most memorable destinations of my first international journey. While many travellers visit Nagarkot for its stunning Himalayan views and peaceful environment, my experience became much more than a sightseeing trip.
Memorable Nagarkot International Trip Experience
One of the first things that caught my attention about Nepal was its geography. Compared to Bangladesh, the landscape felt completely different. At various points, especially from higher elevations, Kathmandu Valley appeared almost like a giant natural stadium. The city seemed surrounded by layers of hills rising in circular patterns, creating a panoramic view unlike anything I had experienced before. From certain viewpoints, it was possible to observe roads, neighbourhoods, and even the airport from above.
However, the trip was memorable for more than just the scenery. During one of our outings, my friend and I planned to visit a shopping area. While looking for transportation, we found ourselves in an uncomfortable and intimidating situation that eventually turned into a valuable life lesson.
At one stage, we were pressured into surrendering most of the money and valuables we were carrying. My wristwatch was particularly important to me because it was one of my favourite possessions. Thinking quickly, I told them that the watch had been a gift from my girlfriend and that losing it would create serious personal problems for me. Surprisingly, they decided to return the watch.
Looking back, it was probably one of the most creative and spontaneous decisions I made during the trip. While everything was happening, another thought crossed my mind. If I handed over all my money, how would we return to our hotel? Quietly and without drawing attention, I managed to hide a portion of my cash. I never told my friend. After we were finally released and started discussing how we would get back, he became concerned about transportation expenses. That was when I revealed the hidden cash. The expression on his face remains one of my favourite memories from the trip.
The challenges did not end there. Because this was during the COVID period, we later discovered that additional travel-related procedures would require more money than we had available. By that stage, much of our budget had already been spent. I attempted several withdrawals using my American Express card, only to discover that acceptance was extremely limited.
For a brief period, we genuinely worried about how we would complete our return journey. Fortunately, after contacting a trusted travel industry contact in Bangladesh, we arranged assistance through local connections, allowing us to complete the required procedures and return home safely.
Today, when I think about Nagarkot, I remember more than mountains and landscapes. I remember lessons about preparation, quick thinking, friendship, resilience, and the importance of remaining calm when facing unexpected situations.
What Impressed Me
The combination of breathtaking natural scenery and unforgettable life experiences made Nagarkot one of the most meaningful destinations of my travel journey.
Key Takeaway
The most valuable travel experiences are often not the places we visit, but the lessons we learn and the stories we carry home.
