Overview
My visit to Doha was originally planned as nothing more than a transit stop on my way to Egypt. However, what I expected to be a few hours of waiting inside an airport became one of the most memorable experiences of my travels.
Doha introduced me not only to a modern city and world-class airport infrastructure but also to meaningful human connections, unexpected opportunities, and valuable lessons about hospitality, professionalism, and international travel.
My Experience
My Doha experience began during my journey to Egypt. While travelling, I met a Bangladeshi couple with whom I spent some time talking during transit. At that time, I was carrying my American Express Platinum Card, which provided airport lounge access along with guest privileges. I invited them to join me in one of Doha’s airport lounges.
After spending some time together, I left them in the lounge and decided to explore Doha through Qatar’s transit visa program. After receiving approval, I joined an organised city tour designed for transit passengers. The tour included travellers from several countries, including China, Russia, the United States, Thailand, the Philippines, and Bangladesh. Initially, I did not know anyone personally.
During the tour, I started talking with another traveller. At first, I did not even realise that he was Bangladeshi. As our conversation continued, I eventually discovered that we were both from Bangladesh. Being abroad, that instantly created a sense of familiarity.
Later, I learned that he was a senior officer in the Bangladesh Air Force and was travelling to Germany to attend a professional training program and conference. What started as a simple conversation gradually became one of the most meaningful discussions of the trip. We talked about aviation, leadership, international exposure, professional development, and life experiences.
After returning to Hamad International Airport, I learned that my flight would depart much earlier than his. When I asked how he planned to spend the remaining hours, he smiled and said that he would probably sit in the terminal and wait. I immediately invited him to join me in the lounge using my guest privilege. We continued our conversation over food and refreshments. Despite holding a highly respected position, he was remarkably humble, friendly, and approachable.
Before we parted ways, he surprised me with a special gift related to one of the military aircraft on which he had received training. To many people, it might appear to be a simple souvenir. To me, it became one of the most meaningful gifts I have ever received while travelling. It represented friendship, respect, and one of the most memorable encounters of my travel journey.
✈️ First Experience with In-Flight Satellite Internet
Another unforgettable experience during this journey happened while flying with Qatar Airways between Doha and Cairo. For the first time in my life, I experienced high-speed satellite internet onboard an aircraft. As the aircraft climbed to cruising altitude, I connected to the onboard Wi-Fi service and was amazed by how well it worked.
I could browse the internet, send messages, and even make video calls while flying thousands of feet above the ground. One of the most memorable moments was making a video call to my wife from the aircraft. The idea of speaking face-to-face with someone while travelling across countries and continents felt almost unbelievable to me. Until then, I had never experienced satellite internet services such as Starlink or any comparable in-flight connectivity system.
For many travellers, it might be a normal feature today. For me, however, it was a glimpse into how rapidly technology is transforming the travel experience. It remains one of the most fascinating moments of my entire journey in Egypt.
An Unexpected Call from Qatar Airways
One final experience made this journey even more memorable. While talking in the lounge, I completely lost track of time. Suddenly, I realised that boarding for my flight was already nearing completion. I quickly left the lounge and headed toward the departure gate. While walking through the terminal, I received a WhatsApp call.
The caller introduced himself as a representative of Qatar Airways and politely asked whether I was Muhammad Riaj Uddin. After confirming my identity, he informed me that boarding was about to close and asked me to confirm I was already on my way. I explained that I was heading toward the gate and would arrive shortly.
The representative reassured me and informed me that they were monitoring my status to ensure that I would not miss my flight. A few moments later, I arrived at the gate where the airline staff warmly welcomed and assisted me. Among all my travel experiences, this remains one of the finest examples of customer service I have ever encountered.
My Observations
Doha impressed me as a city built with long-term vision and strategic planning. Its modern infrastructure, efficient airport operations, organised transportation systems, and commitment to passenger service demonstrate how investment and planning can transform a nation. More importantly, the people I met reminded me that meaningful travel is often defined by human connections rather than destinations.
What Impressed Me
Five things made Doha one of the most memorable transit experiences of my life:
- The opportunity to explore Doha through a transit visa instead of spending the entire layover inside the airport.
- Meeting travellers from different countries and experiencing a truly international environment.
- Forming an unexpected friendship with a senior Bangladesh Air Force officer.
- Experiencing high-speed satellite internet onboard a Qatar Airways flight and making my first-ever video call from the sky.
- The exceptional customer service demonstrated by Qatar Airways when they personally contacted me to ensure that I did not miss my flight.
Key Takeaway
Sometimes the most valuable travel experiences are not found in destinations. They are found in unexpected conversations, genuine kindness, and the people we meet along the way.
